Surabaya - An individual with intellectual disability typically has an intellectual level below the average person. However, they are also ordinary human beings who need self-actualization in various forms. One medium for individuals with intellectual disabilities to express themselves is through painting.
“Painting requires the strength to focus oneself when pouring ideas or any expression onto the canvas. And for those with intellectual disabilities, painting is both self-expression and the revelation of experiences,” said artist Agus ‘Kucink’ Sukamto. On canvas, an individual with intellectual disability has the same freedom as any other human being to convey whatever they wish to share with others.
“Experiences, aspirations, or daily realities are things that can be poured onto the canvas when painting. It is truly enjoyable. And painting for individuals with intellectual disabilities is said to be a form of therapy,” remarked Agus, who once undertook an excursion study in Paris, France. More than 30 paintings by several students with intellectual disabilities in Surabaya were exhibited in the corridor of the Balai Budaya (Cultural Hall), Surabaya.
“In collaboration with the Surabaya City Social Services (Dinsos),” said Susilawati, the exhibition manager, when met by suarasurabaya.net journalists on Tuesday (4/3/2014). For comparison, painting is also still used as a method of care for individuals with intellectual disabilities in developed countries. Near the city of Adelaide, Australia, there is a social enterprise-based institution for individuals with intellectual disabilities called Minda Corporation.
As a form of recreation and self-expression, individuals with intellectual disabilities at Minda are also taught to paint. The paintings they create hold a million meanings, and perhaps only they truly know what they signify. Additionally, these paintings are also managed to be sold as souvenirs for visitors. Care for individuals with disabilities must be tailored to individual needs.
No human being holds a higher or lower position than another. Everyone has potential, and it needs to be developed based on their capacity. Individuals with intellectual disabilities, despite their limited intellect, can still be empowered if given appropriate care.(DPM) source: Suara Surabaya
