One day, the President of the United States (US) visited Indonesia and met with the President of the Republic of Indonesia. The US President highly praised Indonesia's progress. The US President lauded the enforcement of democracy, law, and human rights in Indonesia. The US President then asked the Indonesian President what the secret was to Indonesia's achievements.
Humbly, the Indonesian President replied, “All of this is thanks to the cooperation of all Indonesian people. We have a culture deeply ingrained in the life of our nation, namely gotong royong and togetherness. Democracy, law, and human rights will not be upheld if we do not foster gotong royong and togetherness!”
“But unfortunately, your country also has a high rating in matters of corruption. Why is that?” the US President then asked, a little surprised.
“All of that is also due to the aforementioned culture of gotong royong and togetherness. Corruption in our country is difficult to eradicate because it is carried out with full gotong royong and togetherness!” replied the Indonesian President frankly. (*)
